YOUR TONGUE HAS SEEDS
[4-minute read]
Today, we use applications to convert text to speech but do you know that God has the ability to convert His speech into new realities, too?
Before Creation, when “the earth was formless and empty” and God said, “‘Let there be light,’ and there was light… And God said, ‘Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.’ …God called the vault ‘sky’.” (Genesis 1:1-8).
As God’s children, we are told, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21). If the tongue has the ability and agility to disperse seeds, could it also be true that the heart is the repository for such seeds? Therefore, to have good quality seeds, we need to pay attention to the quality of reflection that goes on inside our hearts. “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34). Therefore, when we harbour distorted thoughts and unhealthy emotions, we reduce the quality of seeds we sow in our relationships and our own lives.
Throughout His entire ministry, Jesus also spoke life and order into different situations.
In Mark 5:41-42, Jesus raised a little girl by saying to her, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old).”
In Luke 7:12-15, He spoke to a lifeless body at a funeral, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.”
Jesus said to Zacchaeus, ‘…come down immediately I must stay at your house today’. Without hesitation, Zacchaeus came down… (Luke 19:5-6).
When Jesus was out at sea with His disciples and caught in a fierce squall, He said to the storm, “‘Quiet, be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.” (Mark 4:39).
We, too, have the power to speak life and order into situations by sowing seeds into life. For a start, we need to speak truth into our own lives. When we declare God’s truths, we embed it into our consciousness and our spirit, and become more open to see what God wants to do in and through us.
Are you sowing seeds of restoration or destruction, hope and healing or despair and pain, destiny and purpose or dead-end advice? Are you building or stifling potential? Good seeds contain a good measure of both grace and truth because we cannot truly love anyone or build up people if we are afraid to be honest with them. And although grace does not make truth sound less difficult to accept, it does make difficult realities less formidable and overwhelming.
The quality of the seeds that we sow into our life is reflected in the quality of interactions and relationships we enjoy. If we sow low self-esteem, self-serving preferences, distrust, envy, pride, greed and impurity, then, no matter how eloquent we sound, we will have low quality outcomes that fall below the best that God has planned for us.
At the same time, we need to confront fears that get in the way of fruitful living. It is important to pay attention to the limiting labels that we have allowed people (including ourselves) to place on us that keep us from telling the truth; that is, they silence us. Avoiding confrontation and uncomfortable conversations through silence is destructive and undermines what God will do when we confront our fears courageously.
On the other hand, when we S.P.E.A.K., we silence ungodly chatter, we proclaim God’s truth and prophecies, we encourage others with truthful and hopeful narratives, we acknowledge that Jesus is the Giver of all we need, and we keep watch over the door of our lips (Psalm 141:3).
When we pay attention to the seeds we gather, we will only need to focus on how and where we can sow fruitfulness, life and destiny.
This is a summary and reflection based on a virtual BIR Session held on 9 May 2026.
